Dear Parents,

Parent Conference Nights are rapidly approaching. Conferences can be scheduled for Wednesday, February 4th from 3:15-6:15 or for Thursday, February 5th from 3:15-8:00. You can pre-schedule conferences with your child’s teachers by going to our school web site at http://SRMS-indian-river.org Click the Pre-schedule Here link and follow the directions. Additional parking will be available at the North County Pool. Eighth graders will be taking FCAT Writes February 10th. It is very important that all eight graders be to school on time that day as it is a timed test. All grades will take FCAT Reading on March 10th and FCAT Math on March 11th. Only eighth graders will take FCAT Science and it will be administered on March 16th. I strongly recommend that your child review for FCAT using fcatexplorer.com. Students should be well rested and eat a good breakfast on test days. This year the Norm-referenced tests (NRT) which compare the child to national averages will not be given.

We are extremely proud of our Teacher of the Year, Rachel Sullivan. Rachel teaches eighth grade Language Arts and serves as the department chair for Language Arts. Miss Sullivan is a fantastic teacher and also trains teachers in preparing multi-media presentations. She and her students utilize technology constantly. Our Florida School-Related Employee of the Year is Mrs. Shana Nathaniel. She is our Discipline Office secretary. Mrs. Nathaniel is a talented employee who handles the many demands of her job with ease and a smile. Congratulations to our outstanding employees!

A reminder that if your child received a semester grade of F in Math, Science, Language Arts or Social Studies he/she will need to attend Course Recovery on Tuesdays and Thursdays until they successfully complete the program. Eighth graders will not be promoted to the high school until all courses have been made up. Please help us out! Teacher duty lasts from 7:30-7:50 in the morning and from 2:45-3:00 in the afternoon. To ensure the safety of your child, they should not be dropped off earlier than 7:30 and they need to be picked up no later than 3 o’clock. Don’t forget that a pre-arranged absence will only be excused if a note is received at least five school days prior to the absence.

We look forward to seeing you at parent conferences soon.

Sincerely,

Eileen Shirah
